Chennai district spans over an area of 178.20 sq km. Geographically, it lies between 12° 9' and 13° 9' latitude and 80° 12' and 80° 19' longitude. It is located on the coast of Bay of Bengal at the north-east end of Tamil Nadu. Cooum and Adyar are the two main rivers in the district. The Cooum river passes through the centre of the city and enters a sea which is between the Fort St. George and the university buildings. On the other hand, the Adyar river makes its way via the southern part of the city and enters the sea near Adyar.

The economy of the district has witnessed a shift from the trade and commerce sector to the administration and service sector. Manufacturing was an important sector after the post independence era.
But, in the recent past there has been a consistent contribution from various industries like the information technology (IT), outsourcing and IT-enabled services to name a few. Besides fisheries and tourism industry that contribute to the economy, the exports of goods like quartz, granite stones, chemicals, barites and cotton goods also have a major share. Chennai celebrates various fairs and festivals throughout the year. The celebrations in the region are not only confined to the traditional fairs and festivals, but many modern fairs like exhibitions are also celebrated in the city. Brahmotsavam, a festival of Kapaleeswarar temple, is celebrated for ten days along with a big fair held near the temple. This festival also includes the car festivals celebrated on the seventh day, in which about 50, 000 devotees participate. Other such festivals are Skanda Sashti and Uthiram celebrated in Ayypari and Panguni months respectively, Jathirai festival, Navrathri, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Sri Ram Navami and Sivaratri to name a few.
