The album, rather than being a solemn and reflective collection of emo songs that recounts the band's past tragedy, is an almost upbeat collection of irreverent lyrics and words that celebrate the life the band has ahead. The sentiment can best be felt in the song 'Duality'. Raneri sings with a disaffected wail, 'Some say it's all fate, but I say we control our lives.

The band got its name when on their way to a show on, with the intention of giving New Found Glory a demo CD, and they were trying to think of a name to write on the CD. They passed the, and decided to write 'Bayside' on the CD simply as a name for New Found Glory, but the name became permanent. The group self-released a 5-song and signed to to issue their first release, Long Stories Short EP in 2001.
